6 Reasons why SeaUsoon is the Best Option for your Family’s Offshore Sabbatical
Choosing to take a family sabbatical on the high seas is a profound commitment to your children’s education and your family's bond. Central to this journey is the vessel—not just as a means of transport, but as a secure home that must protect your most precious cargo across vast oceans. SeaUsoon, a Malö 45 Classic1, is a heavy-displacement offshore monohull designed specifically to prioritize safety and physical comfort over the compromises of speed or modern light-build trends.
By selecting SeaUsoon as your rental vessel, you bypass the exhaustive preparation phase typically required for a sabbatical. The yacht is already configured with 2025 and 2026 technical updates aimed at ensuring a reliable, stable, and forgiving environment for parents and children alike.

1. Safety Through Structural Integrity: The "Heavy Build" Advantage
In offshore sailing, safety begins with the hull. SeaUsoon is built to CE-category A (Ocean) standards from a well-known Swedish manufacturer. Unlike mass-produced lighter sailboats, the Malö 45 is a "heavy-displacement" cruiser of 17 tons for 14.65m long, which provides a fundamentally different experience in open water.
More info
- Hand-Laid Construction: The hull is constructed from hand-laid GRP sandwich laminate with a balsa core, providing a rigid, insulated structure.
- Decades of Care: To ensure the long-term integrity of the laminate, the vessel has been stored in a heated warehouse for six months every year for over 25 years.
- Hull Health: In 2024, the underwater hull was blasted and reapplied with adhesive primer and dual layers of antifouling, with a fresh coat added in 2025 to ensure optimal protection.
- Interior Quality: The interior features selected mahogany that is matte-varnished and hand-polished, providing a warm, secure environment below deck.
2. Reliable Technical System and Modern Redundancy
A safe sailing journey relies on the redundancy of critical systems. SeaUsoon has been updated to ensure that if one system fails, another is ready to take its place.
More info
- Mechanical Steering Redundancy: A Hydrovane (windvane) is installed at the aft of the ship. This is a completely independent mechanical steering system that requires zero electricity and provides a vital backup to the primary autopilot.
- Energy Autonomy: Three ways to generate electricity. A 495-liter stainless steel diesel tank that fuels a 4 kW electric generator. 12V and 24V alternators that charge high battery storage. Two solar panels that maintain the 24V batteries.
- Water Capacity: With a total fresh water capacity of 725 liters, this large volume is distributed across three stainless steel tanks. The tanks can be filled at shore and also with a 140 liter / hour portable 24V watermaker.
- Dual Propulsion: The 115 hp Nanni TDI engine can provide significant thrust and longevity with its large tank, in backup of poor wind.
3. Comfort and Rest: The Human Element for Safety
Fatigue is the primary cause of risk at sea. A boat that is uncomfortable to live on creates a tired crew. SeaUsoon addresses this through a focus on ergonomics and high-quality rest.
More info
- Health-Focused Bedding: In 2025, every berth in the three cabins was equipped with Neptune ergonomic mattresses. These feature a 170 mm 100% latex core and a tailor-made slat system to ensure orthopedic support and airflow.
- Climate Management: For sailing in cooler climates or damp seasons, the Eberspächer D10W Hydronic II system (2025) provides hot air heating throughout the interior, ensuring the family can always retreat to a dry warm home. The same energy-efficient system is used to ventilate the ship in hot regions.
- Hygiene and Waste: The boat features two electric marine toilets with electric vacuum pumps that discharge into 160 litres of holding tank capacity, ensuring reliable sanitation for the family.
- Hot Water: A 40-litre boiler provides hot water supplying the two bathrooms, the stand-alone shower-room and the aft external shower.
4. Power Autonomy and Modern Communication
For a modern sabbatical, this ability to receive rich weather data and maintain a reliable power supply is a safety requirement.
More info
- Affordable Offshore Data Access: SeaUsoon is equipped with Starlink and PredictWind Datahub. This allows the family to access rich weather data, routing options, and advanced boat-related information even in the middle of the ocean. A backup with a Garmin InReach is also available for weather updates.
- High-Capacity Energy Storage: The vessel is equipped with six 225 Ah gel batteries and a new battery management system (Mastervolt Easy View).
- Security Communication: SeaUsoon is equipped with fixed and mobile VHF transmitters, an EPIRB, two AIS PLBs, fixed and mobile satellite communication (Starlink, Garmin inReach).
- Navigation Suite: The boat features a B&G Zeus 3 plotter (2021) and a B&G Halo 20+ pulse compression radar (2024) for clear visibility of other vessels and weather patterns as well as an AIS transmitter amplified with the Predictwind DataHub.
5. Practicality in the Galley and Living Spaces
Life on a sabbatical happens mostly in the salon and the galley. These areas on SeaUsoon are built for functionality at sea.
More info
- Secure Storage: The galley is designed for sea use, featuring safety stops on all doors and drawers to keep items secure while the boat is in motion.
- Safe Cooking: Features a 3-burner gimballed gas stove with an oven, and a microwave.
- Fresh Water Supply: With 725 litres of fresh water stored across three stainless steel tanks, the family has a significant reserve for drinking and cooking. Water is supplied with electric pump as well as mechanical pumps in case of electrical outage.
- Functional Surfaces: The galley worktops are made of Corian, providing a durable surface that is easy to maintain and hard to damage.
6. The Monohull advantages: Security, Maneuverability, and Harbor Space
Selecting a monohull like SeaUsoon provides distinct advantages when it comes to the logistical and environmental realities of a sabbatical including harbor visits, anchoring and trans-oceanic journey.
More info
- Ease of Maneuvering short- / single- handed: With a length of 14.65m and a beam of 4.12m, SeaUsoon is agile in tight marina spaces, even more thanks to its bow thruster and powerful engine. The shaft drive drive transmission, powerful engine, and hydraulic gearbox provide predictable direct control during docking. Its size is also an asset in terms of 360° visibility.
- Forgiving in Changing Weather: The monohull design is naturally more forgiving during sudden weather shifts. If caught in high winds while docking or anchoring, the boat's narrower profile experiences less 'windage' that a catamaran for example, preventing it from being blown sideways as easily.
- Stability Underway: The folding 3-blade propeller ensures efficiency while sailing, but the availability of a 115 hp engine ensures the crew can maintain control even when wind and current oppose their progress in narrow channels. The heavy cruiser hull has been designed for security and comfort for Ocean navigation (A-class category).
- Harbor Accessibility: The 2.08m draught allows access to most standard harbors. Furthermore, its standard beam means it can fit into traditional slips, avoiding the significantly higher fees and limited berths availability.
- The Tender: A reliable way to get to shore is provided with the 2026 Highfiled 280 aluminium-bottom dinghy and a 6hp Yamaha engine.
